Ticks

IMAGE NUMBER: 3S6624 LICENSE: RIGHTS MANAGED

SEM: Arachnids: Ticks: Ixodes ricinus, Leg: Haller's Organ: Ticks are blood-sucking mites. They sense their warmblooded host animals through vibrations and scent. This species of Ixodes has developed a specific organ for smelling on its leg, the Haller's Organ. If a host draws near, they drop from grasses and bushes on their victims, search for a warm, thin-skinned area and drill their mouth parts in to the host. The blood-sucking process can last several days, during which the tick takes up to 200 times its weight in blood. Magnification = 900x
