Herpes simplex virus. Colored transmission electron micrograph of a herpes simplex virus (round) budding from the surface of a cell. The virus consists of a symmetrical capsid or protein coat made up of 162 capsomeres (hexagonally arranged protein units) which surround a core of DNA (blue). Herpes occurs in two forms: type 1 and 2. These types are visually identical, but biochemically different. Herpes simplex causes a variety of infections in humans including whitlows and cold sores of the mouth and genitalia. Genital herpes is sexually transmitted, and associated with cervical cancers in women. Magnification: x100,000 at 6x6cm size.
