Ringworm fungus

IMAGE NUMBER: E00273 LICENSE: RIGHTS MANAGED

Ringworm fungus. Colored SEM of Epidermophyton floccosum. This dermatophyte fungus is one of several species that cause ringworm, athlete's foot, and other such tinea infections of the skin and nails. The fungus' pear-shaped spore-producing structures (macroonidia) are seen connected by filaments (hyphae). The hyphae spread into a large fungal network, known as a mycelium. This species, the only one in its genus, is found living only in association with humans. It is spread from one person to another through direct contact.
