Back pain

Back pain. Computer-generated abstract artwork of back pain (lumbago), showing the torso of a woman in posterior view. White lightning gives the effect of painful nerve impulses. Pain in the back is very common. It is usually caused by strain which injures soft tissues (muscles, tendons or ligaments) around the bones of the spine. People most likely to suffer back pain are those whose work involves heavy lifting, or those who spend long periods sitting in one position. Pregnant women commonly suffer back pain towards late pregnancy. Treatment includes rest, correct posture and painkilling drugs. Persistent pain may indicate a serious disorder, such as slipped disc.
