MRI scan with cerebellum highlighted

MRI scan of a normal brain. The cerebellum (center left) is highlighted in green. This is a region of the brain concerned primarily with the maintenance of posture and balance and with the coordination of movement. The cerebellum is linked to the brainstem (center), a stalk of nerve tissue connecting the brain with the spinal cord. The round protrusion on the brainstem, the pons, contains thick bundles of nerve fibers. The top part of the brain, the cerebrum, is the largest part of the brain and is divided into the right and left hemispheres. The dark area at upper center is a central cavity, the ventricle, which is filled with cerebrospinal fluid.
