Effects of aging

Cerebral artery in brain. Colored X-ray angiogram of the head of an elderly male, showing cerebral blood vessels in the brain. A blue profile of the face is seen. Superimposed is a skull X-ray with the blood vessels highlighted (yellow). In the neck region is the carotid artery, which branches into cerebral arteries inside the brain. The brain is the most oxygen hungry organ in the human body. It receives 20% of the heart's output of blood, and is irreversibly damaged if starved of oxygen for more than a few minutes. Angiograms are obtained by injecting a substance into the bloodstream which is opaque to X-rays. Blood clots or arterial disease may be detected in this way.
