The elongated cell (at center) is undergoing fission, in which its red colored DNA has divided and moved to opposite poles of the cell. A cell wall will develop to divide this cell into two daughter cells. Other bacteria are seen in cross section. Escherichia coli is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacillus bacteria. It is a normal inhabitant of the human intestine, but may cause intestinal infections. It is the bacteria most commonly used in genetic engineering research.
