Ultrasound scan of fetus

Sixteen-week-old fetus. Colored ultrasound scan of a 16-week-old human foetus in side view. The head is in the upper right, with the face in profile towards center. The torso is at lower center, and a limb seen at left. At this age the fetus appears completely human. Fingers and toes will have formed and the skin will be covered with a fine hair (lanugo), while eyebrows and hair on the head develop. The crown-rump length (sitting height) at 16 weeks is about 14 centimeters and the weight about 200 grams. Ultrasound scanning uses high-frequency sound waves to build images of structures inside the body. Scanning in pregnancy enables fetal development to be assessed.
