Western North America. True-color satellite image of the western side of North America. North is towards top left. In this image vegetation is green, water is blue and bare ground is gray/ brown. The Gulf of California is above the Baja California (at lower right), the strip of land which runs into the Pacific Ocean from California. To their North are the Sierra Nevada mountains. This image was compiled from numerous cloudless images taken by an Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument aboard a United States NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) weather satellite.
