Small and large diamonds. A diamond is the hardest mineral, and is used for decorative jewelry and as an industrial abrasive. A diamond is an allotrope or a crystalline form of carbon. The crystals may be colorless or tinted yellow, brown, gray or green. Diamonds form when the element carbon is subjected to extreme pressures and temperatures underground.
