Skeletal muscle and bone

Medical illustration showing the placement and connection of skeletal muscle to bone. The human body contains 630 active muscles. Muscle is attached to bone by tendons and other tissues, and exerts force by converting chemical energy into tension and contraction. Skeletal muscles carry out voluntary movements and are what ache after strenuous exercise. Skeletal muscles are the body's most abundant tissue, comprising 23% of a woman's body weight and 40% of a man's body weight.
