Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) showing a large macrophage (a type of white blood cell), surrounded by (clockwise from top): an erythrocyte, or red blood cell (red), a dying erythrocyte (yellow), and a white blood cell, or lymphocyte (white). All blood cells are formed from bone marrow stem cells. Red blood cells provide oxygen to the body, while white blood cells are responsible for the immune response; they eat the macrophages' dead cells and foreign bodies.
